Musa itinerans var. itinerans, also known as the Yunnan wild banana, is a wild banana species native to the continental regions of Southeast Asia, ranging from Northeast India to Vietnam. It is found across the forests of Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Taiwan, and both South and Southeast China, including Hainan Island.

This banana species is not only valuable from a botanical perspective but also has practical uses: its inner stalks are consumed as a vegetable by local communities, and in China, it serves as an important food source for wild Asian elephants.

Musa itinerans also gained recognition through the Kew Gardens Millennium Seed Bank Project, where it became the 24,200th preserved plant species - marking the collection of 10% of the world’s wild flora. This highlights its rarity and ecological significance.
